VIRGINIA BEACH — A man was killed after being shot by a police officer following an hours-long incident here Saturday.
Police were called to a “domestic” in the 5700 block of Paiute Road just after 11 a.m.
There, police found a man, later identified as Jeffrey D. Tyree, 57, “holding a large knife attempting to harm himself,” police said in a news release.
Officers negotiated with the man – who was not identified. After several hours the man put down the knife.
As officers approached the man, he again picked up the knife “and approached one officer in a threatening manner,” police said.
Another officer saw the “immediate threat” and fired a shot, hitting the man.
He was taken to a hospital where later died.
No officers were injured.
Investigations are under way by the Virginia Beach Internal Affairs office, the Homicide Unit, and the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office, authorities said.
