In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Norfolk Mermaid, Virginia Arts Festival announced a Mermaid Juried Art Competition for artists in Norfolk.
The iconic mermaid statues can be found all over the city and the city is encouraging members of the community to create a mermaid of their own.
Works will be viewed and selected by a committee.
Cash prizes will be awarded in two categories: youth ($250 cash prize) and adult, 18 and older, ($1,000 cash prize).
Select works will be on display during the Virginia Arts Festival’s Spring 2019 season, throughout the Downtown Area.
Exact locations will be announced at a later time, organizers said.
Artwork will be selected on the basis of originality, creativity, understanding of the spirit and history of the Norfolk Mermaid, and craftsmanship.
The call is open to artists working in all two-dimensional mediums.
Three-dimensional works will not be eligible.

The call for submissions runs through March 1.
All artists will be notified of acceptance on March 11.
Worth noting: while the call for artists, from novice through professional, are encouraged, they must have a tie to the Norfolk area.
