Jac. Vandenberg, Inc. of Yonkers, New York is recalling 1,727 cartons of fresh peaches, 1,207 cartons of fresh nectarines and 365 cartons of fresh plums because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the FDA.
The stores affected in Virginia Beach and Norfolk are Aldi and Walmart.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and other with weakened immune systems, according to the recall notice.
Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, according to the recall notice.
Shoppers at Aldi need to look out for nectarines, peaches and plums packaged in a 2-pound bag with the brand Rio Duero, EAN# 7804650090281, 7804650090298, 7804650090304, according to the notice.
The nectarines sold at Walmart are sold as a bulk retail produce item with PLU sticker (PLU# 4044, 3035, 4378) showing the country of origin of Chile.
The FDA said no illnesses have been reported.
The recall was the result of a routine sampling program by the packing house which revealed the finished products contained the bacteria, according to the FDA.
The company has ceased the distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.
Consumers who have purchased the products are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
