Virginia Beach is offering early issuance of February 2019 SNAP benefits because of the shutdown

VIRGINIA BEACH — Because of the ongoing government shutdown, the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services will begin the early processing of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP Benefit renewals on Jan. 14 until 7 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

The USDA, which oversees the SNAP program, has asked states to make February benefits available early to participants in the program due to the shutdown, according to a news release from the city.

If you are currently receiving SNAP benefits in the city, the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services urges you to drop off the following materials in person:

  • Renewal Applications
  • Any Other Associated Documentation (as appropriate)

All documentation should be brought to the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services Administration Building (3432 Virginia Beach Blvd.) on Monday, Jan. 14 or Tuesday, Jan. 15 between the hours of 8 a.m.-7 p.m.

The department will continue to have extended hours until 7 p.m. through Thursday, Jan. 17.

However, to ensure your February benefits are processed early, bring any necessary documentation by the close of business on Jan. 15.

Those who submit their documentation should be able to access their February benefits by Jan. 20.

Note that this will be an early issuance of February benefits and will not be in addition to funds normally dispersed in February.

At this time the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services does not have information on the benefits process for March.
