Here’s a breakdown of volunteering at the City of Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH — The city’s Office of Volunteer Resources has released its annual volunteer resource report, which provides a breakdown of volunteerism to the city for fiscal year 2017-2018.

Here are the highlights:

  • 15,207 volunteers
  • 1,120,403 hours of volunteer service valued at $27,662,743
  • Real estate tax rate savings of 5.09 cents per $100 of assessed value
  • 2,680 pounds of trash and 8,000 cigarette butts were removed from the ground
  • Emergency Medical Services Department, which is the nation’s largest volunteer-based EMS agency, had 1,144 volunteers provide 352,979 volunteer hours — the most hours of any city department
  • The Sheriff’s Office had the second most, with 802 volunteers contributing 351,847 hours of service to the city.
  • 110 students received one-on-one mentoring and literacy tutoring from volunteers, twice a week
