NORFOLK — As part of the Hermitage Museum and Garden’s “Community Day,” the public is invited to explore the museum and attend a lecture by a visiting photographer from the Smithsonian Institute on Saturday.
All programming and admission at the Hermitage will be free as part of Saturday’s event.
The museum’s special exhibition, 3D Printing the Smithsonian, will be on display available for visitors. The exhibit involved the Hermitage teaming up with staff at the Smithsonian’s Freer|Sackler Galleries in Washington, D.C. to 3D scan and print 10 Smithsonian objects that relate to the Hermitage’s collection of Asian art.
Objects include a life-sized Cosmic Buddha sculpture, a Fushimi doll of Hotei, and a funerary relief bust from Syria. Visitors are welcome to view, and touch, all 10 objects on display.

As part of Community Day, the Hermitage is also offering a free lecture from one of the people responsible for 3D scanning at the Smithsonian
Robert Harrell, a photographer at the Freer|Sackler Galleries, will share his expertise as part of the Hermitage’s Community Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Harrell will discuss the process of photographing the objects included as 3D prints in the Hermitage exhibition. He will also go over the basics of photogrammetry, steps to create 3D models, software programs used, and how to print the 3D models. There will also be a question and answer session at the end of Harrell’s presentation.
