Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ Class of 2018 not only had the highest SAT scores in Southside Hampton Roads, their performance again beat national mean scores.
The division’s 2018 graduates also had more SAT test takers and higher scores when compared to the previous year, according to data released from the college board.
The VBCPS total mean score of 1107 was higher than the nationwide mean score of 1049, according to a news release from VBCPS.
In reading and writing, VBCPS’ score was 563, or 34 points higher than the national average. In math, the division’s score was 545, or 25 points higher than the national average.
From 2017 to 2018, the number of VBCPS graduating seniors taking the SAT increased from 3,085 to 3,218, according to VBCPS.
Total mean scores jumped from 1091 to 1107.
Something to note is that scores prior to 2017 cannot be compared because the SAT rolled out a new test and a new scoring scale in 2016.
“Our students continue to showcase increased levels of performance, including here with the SAT,” said VBCPS Superintendent Aaron Spence. “These results showcase that our students have the necessary knowledge, critical-thinking skills and, ultimately, the determination to be successful in future ventures, including in the college setting.”
VCBPS offers many supports to help students excel in college admissions tests.
This is the fourth consecutive year all of the division’s eighth-grade students are taking the PSAT 8/9.
The division also offers all ninth-10th- and 11th-grade students the PSAT at no cost.
Three years ago, the school division began a partnership with Khan Academy for all 10th-grade students to take a personalized SAT course in their English 10 classes.
During the second semester, students use their PSAT results to complete the course, which is designed to strengthen their SAT skills.
