
It’s that time of the year again: College application season.
As the Nov. 1 early decision college application deadline nears, WalletHub has released a list of the “top” colleges in Virginia.
Locally, William & Mary ranks second on the list, behind the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
The rankings are based on seven factors, including admission rate, net cost, on-campus crime, graduation rate and more.
More than 30 metrics were used to measure 951 American institutions in those categories, resulting in a “grade” on a 100-point scale.
William & Mary received a score of 69.32. UVA scored a 71.75.
Here’s how William & Mary ranks statewide in all categories:
- 5th – Admission rate (37 percent for Class of 2022)
- 33rd – Net cost ($17,415 average for 2016-2017 school year)
- 10th – Student-faculty ratio (11:1)
- 10th – On-campus crime (get more information here)
- 10th – Gender & racial diversity (59 percent white, 58 percent female. (Get more information here)
- 2nd – Graduation rate (85 percent for 4-year bachelor’s degree students)
- 6th – Post-attendance median salary ($57,100 early career, $113,600 mid-career)
Nationwide, William & Mary ranks 46th based on the same metrics, behind no. 45 Tufts University in Massachusetts and ahead of no. 47 University of California- Santa Barbara.
By region, William & Mary is 9th in the southern United States.
WalletHub developed the rankings using data from several sources, including the National Center for Education Statistics, Council for Community and Economic Research, U.S. Department of Education, COLLEGEdata and PayScale.
