VIRGINIA BEACH — You won’t have to pay for parking along Atlantic Avenue starting Nov. 1.

Free parking along Atlantic Avenue during the off-season will become the standard following last winter’s successful pilot program, according to the city.

Through March 31, the free spaces will be available for two hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week on the western side of Atlantic Avenue.

Except for the blocks between 10th and 11th streets and 21st and 22nd streets, free parking will be available 3rd street to 40th street.

The city wants motorists to note that from Nov. 1 to Dec. 30, parking in spaces south of 15th street will be limited to 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in order to accommodate queuing for Holiday Lights at the Beach.

Staff followed up last year’s pilot project with a survey.

Results indicated that more than a quarter of respondents used free parking during the pilot program and nearly three quarters of respondents (73 percent) thought free parking on Atlantic Avenue during the off season was a good idea.
