VIRGINIA BEACH — Two suspected robbers engaged police here in a shootout Thursday night as Tropical Storm Michael blows through the area.
Officers at around 11:20 p.m. were in the 1700 block of South Independence Boulevard “when they observed two men exit the 7-Eleven located at 1797 S. Independence Boulevard after what appeared to be an armed robbery,” police said in a news release.
“The two masked suspects were confronted by the officers who announced themselves and ordered the suspects to stop,” police said. “When confronted, one of the suspects began to fire at the officers with a handgun. One round entered and passed through one of the officer’s pant leg, not injuring the officer. Both Officers returned fire at the armed suspect, striking him once.”
The pair fled on foot.
Soon, several other officers converged in the area. One of the suspects was caught “a short distance away,” by a police dog and the dog’s handler.
That suspect was taken to a hospital “with non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the K-9 apprehension and a gunshot wound.,” police said. “The second suspect was apprehended shortly after by another K-9 officer without incident.”
Suspects’ info and charges:
- Jasper Miles Wynn, 20, of Chesapeake. Wynn is charged with robbery. Additional charges for attempted capital murder, conspiracy, abduction, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony are forthcoming.
- Jahkil Tiashion McPhail, 20, of the 700 block of Hampshire Lane, Virginia Beach. McPhail is charged with two counts of attempted capital murder, conspiracy, abduction, two counts of robbery, and five counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Police said a three-tiered investigation will be conducted by the Virginia Beach Police Investigative Division, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney. The officers involved will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigations.
