Motorcyclist killed following collision with school bus

NORFOLK — A motorcyclist died after colliding with a school bus here Monday.

Police said the crash happened shortly after 5 p.m. at the the intersection of Granby Street and East Gilpin Avenue — the call came in as a “serious motor vehicle crash with injuries.”

A preliminary investigation indicated the motorcycle was traveling northbound on Granby Street and the school bus was traveling eastbound on East Gilpin Avenue. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

The motorcyclist, 58-year-old Ricky Lupton of the 9400 block of Selby Place, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries; however, he died shortly after arrival, police said.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, police said.

The bus driver and the three Oceanview Elementary students were not injured, police said.

Police said the results of the investigation will be turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review and determination of charges, police said.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to contact the Norfolk Crime Line at 888-LOCK-U-UP or submit a tip through the P3Tips mobile app.
