Want to learn how to safely handle a concealed handgun? James City County Police will be conducting a free educational session on the topic next month.
The session, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 15, will cover basic handgun safety, handling, storage, as well as laws on carrying a concealed handgun in Virginia.
While the class is focused on handguns, participants should leave theirs at home, police said. There is no hands-on training during the session.
The course meets the requirement for documented proof of handgun competency as part of the application process for a Virginia concealed handgun permit. A certificate of attendance will be provided to attendees.
The class will be conducted at the James City County Law Enforcement Center, 4600 Opportunity Way.
While the course is free, online preregistration is required.
Course participants will receive free gun locks from Project ChildSafe.
Anyone with questions about the course should call Master Officer Alan McDowell at 757-603-6026. Questions about registration should be directed to James City County Police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams at 757-259-5173.
