Students in the York County schools will have to spend a little more time in the classroom to make up for time lost to Hurricane Florence.
Dec. 19 will function a full school day, the school division announced Wednesday. The day had previously been a scheduled early release day.
York County’s schools were closed Sept. 11 and 12 after a mandatory evacuation order was issued by Governor Ralph Northam in light of Hurricane Florence. Much of Poquoson and Seaford are part of the Zone A evacuation area because they are prone to flooding.
The school division has banked time — or instructional time in excess of the 990 minimum hours in a school year — built into the academic calendar and will help offset some of the missed time.
Additional schedule adjustments may be necessary if more school days are canceled in the future.
Williamsburg-James City County Schools also extended early release days to make up for cancellations stemming from Florence.
