Program to host children’s auditions to appear in ‘Great Russian Nutcracker’

VIRGINIA BEACH — Local dancers might have the opportunity of a lifetime just around the corner.

As part of the “Dance with Us” program, celebrated ballerina and professional instructor Alisa Bolotnikova will be in Virginia Beach Oct. 21 hosting children’s auditions to appear in Moscow Ballet’s production of “Great Russian Nutcracker,” according to a news release from the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.

The free auditions are open to children 6 to 17 years old with at least 1 year of ballet training.

Costumes are provided, but there may be a casting fee, according to the news release.

Children selected will receive personal rehearsal time with award-winning Moscow Ballet directors and perform alongside over 40 Russian professionals, including Svetlana Zakharova, Diana Vyshneva and Vladimir Vasiliev.

Moscow Ballet directors will host rehearsals through the fall at Academy of Classical and Contemporary Dance. For 30 years, the local school has committed to ensuring “their students learn how to be dancers, not just how to follow specific choreography,” according to the news release.

Available roles include Party Children, Mice, Snowflakes, Snow Maidens and more.

“Dance with Us” follows the production’s Dove Peace Tour to more than 100 cities in North America. Across the continent, 6,000 aspiring dancers will gain professional experience in front of “backdrops hand-painted by Russian masters and a Dove of Peace with a 20-foot wingspan,” according to the news release.

“Great Russian Nutcracker” is showing at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, Nov. 27 – 28 at 7 p.m.
