VIRGINIA BEACH — This city is returning to “normal operations,” after the region dodged Hurricane Florence.
“We have only one report that a tree fell, and that was in a city park,” officials wrote in a news release Friday afternoon.
Shelters
The emergency shelter operation at Kellam High School (general and medical friendly) closed at 5 p.m. Friday. For anyone who requires emergency housing due to Hurricane Florence can call 311.
The emergency pet shelter at Landstown Elementary School was closed earlier Friday and the dogs were taken to the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S. Birdneck Road for care. Owners have been notified of the transfer and new pick-up location.
Municipal garages
Free emergency parking in the municipal garages at 9th and 31st streets for Virginia Beach residents will end Saturday at 7 a.m. Vehicles already parked through the free-entry program may remain until noon on Monday. The free-entry program began at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
Parks
Red Wing Park, Munden Point Park, Pungo Ferry Landing Park, Little Island Park (minus the Fishing Pier), and the Sandbridge Beach Facility reopened at 2 p.m. Friday. The Little Island Fishing Pier will remain closed until the winds and wind gusts subside.
Pungo-Blackwater Library
Since the mandatory evacuation of Zone A has been lifted, the Pungo-Blackwater Library will be open regular hours on Saturday.
Landfill and Resource Recovery Center
The Virginia Beach LRRC will reopen Saturday. Hours: 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will also open Monday to provide extra days for residents to properly dispose of yard and other debris from yards.
Normal landfill hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Residents looking to dispose of sand from sandbags can take it to the Landfill; do not place in trash bin. The Landfill has a special section for dirt, sand and yard debris. Dump the sand out of the bags into the sand pile and keep bags for a rainy day or dispose of them. The Resource Recovery Center is taking all of their usual items including household hazardous waste.
