Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina as a Category 1 storm at 7:15 a.m. Friday.
Hampton Roads managed to escape most of the weather coming through as the hurricane slowly moves through the Carolinas and up the Appalachians, said Jeff Orrock, meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service in Wakefield.
Florence, like all other hurricanes, likes to spin, he said.
So Friday, people in southeastern Virginia will see a few tornado warnings through the afternoon because of the winds coming from the southeast.
There will be breezy conditions throughout Friday and the weekend, tapering off around Sunday with bands of showers coming in from the east.
People can expect minor tidal flooding, said Orrock, and some pockets of showers throughout the weekend.
He described the storm conditions as a nor’easter and has advised residents to keep an eye on the areas most prone to flooding.
