A state-run shelter is open on the campus of William & Mary for residents and evacuees seeking refuge from Hurricane Florence.
The shelter is in the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, 705 S. Henry St.
There also is a state-run shelter at Christopher Newport University, officials said.
The shelters will provide only basic, necessary services and support to help ensure disaster survivors are able to stay safe, healthy and can begin the recovery process.
To prepare for staying at a shelter for any length of time, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management recommends bringing:
- Pillows, blankets, sleeping bags or air mattresses
- Extra clothing, shoes, eyeglasses, etc.
- Cellphones/electronic devices with chargers
- Folding chairs, lawn chairs or cots
- Personal hygiene supplies
- Flashlights and batteries
- Quiet games, books and favorite toys
- Important papers
- Prescription medications
- Food items/snacks/baby food and formula
Alcohol and weapons are not allowed in shelters.

York County is providing three parking lots where residents can park their boats, trailers and vehicles for the duration of the storm:
- The McReynolds Athletic Complex (MAC), 412 Sports Way
- Chisman Creek Park, 1314 Wolf Trap Road (FULL as of Thursday)
- Kiln Creek Park, 2901 Kiln Creek Parkway
