WJCC Schools, JCC offices to reopen Thursday, resume normal operations

A change in the forecast for Hurricane Florence has caused Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools and county offices to reopen Thursday and resume normal operations.

Schools

The school division told families of its decision in a robocall at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

WJCC Schools canceled classes Wednesday so that James City County nd Williamsburg could use their facilities as emergency shelters, but government officials have determined that is no longer necessary.

Hurricane Florence will bring rain to the Williamsburg area over the coming days, but impacts are not forecast to be as severe as originally thought, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.

School division spokeswoman Eileen Cox said the school expects to resume normal operations and continue school as normal for the rest of the week, but the division is keeping an eye on the forecast just in case.

“Please know that student and staff safety is always our first priority and decisions to open or close schools are not made without great consideration,” the school division said in a news announcement on its website.

County services

James City County offices will be reopening and resuming normal operations Thursday.

Government offices, parks, libraries and the James City County Recreation Center will continue normal operating hours from Thursday through Friday.

The Chickahominy Riverfront Park will remain closed until further notice.

The Emergency Operations Center will remain partially activated on Thursday and Friday as officials continue to monitor weather conditions and the forecast.
