Delays expected this weekend during Patriots Triathlon Festival

Residents in James City County should be prepared for additional traffic and some delays this weekend because of the Patriots Triathlon Festival.

The triathlons are expected to cause delays in several areas of the county Saturday and Sunday, James City County said in a news release.

About 3,000 people are expected to be in the area for the triathlon, Kinetic Multisports said in a news release Thursday.

The affected areas will vary by time. Those areas include:

Saturday 7:30-11:30 a.m.:

  • Jamestown Road near the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry
  • Greensprings Road (detour)
  • 4H Club Road
  • John Tyler Highway, including the intersection of John Tyler Highway and Greensprings Road
  • Intersection of Monticello Avenue and John Tyler Highway

Sunday 7 a.m. to noon.:

  • John Tyler Highway and Greensprings Road
  • John Tyler Highway and Monticello Avenue

Police will direct traffic during the race, but drivers should still use caution while moving through congested areas. Bicyclists will still be on the roads, even while traffic is moving steadily.

Kinetic Multisports said there will be several events, including the half, Olympic and sprint triathlons:

Sept. 8: Half

  • 1.2-mile swim, 57-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run
  • 7 a.m. start

Sept. 8: Olympic

  • 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10-kilometer run
  • 7:30 a.m. start

Sept. 9: Sprint

  • 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer run
  • 7 a.m. start
