3 firefighters overcome by heat while battling Kingsmill house fire

Three James City County firefighters suffered heat-related illnesses while fighting a blaze at a home in Kingsmill early Tuesday, fire officials said.

Flames were shooting through the roof of the three-story home in the 300 block of East Landing when crews arrived around 3 a.m., fire officials said.

Two occupants and a dog escaped from the home unharmed, Kingsmill Police Chief James West said.

The blaze was brought under control shortly before 6 a.m., fire officials said. Two crews remained at the scene into the afternoon to ensure the was extinguished.

The injured firefighters were taken to a local hospital, where two of them were treated and released, fire officials said. The third firefighter remains at the hospital for observation, fire officials said.

A fourth firefighter suffered a minor foot injury and was treated at the scene.

The York County Department of Fire & Life Safety the Williamsburg Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The James City County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
