Health officials are looking for a cat that bit or scratched a person in the parking lot of a York County Walmart.
The cat, which health officials say was small and black with green eyes, bit the person Aug. 22, the Peninsula Health District said in a news release.
The incident happened at the Walmart store at 731 E. Rochambeau Drive, the release said.
If the cat is not found, the person who was bitten or scratched may need to undergo post-exposure rabies treatment.
The cat will not be taken away from its owner if located but will only be placed on an in-home confinement period of 10 days.
Anyone who has seen an animal matching the cat’s description in the area of Walmart is asked to contact the Peninsula Health District’s Williamsburg Area Environmental Health Office at 757-603-4277 during normal business hours or York County Animal Control at 757-890-3601 after hours.
The health department recommends residents make sure their animals are vaccinated against the rabies virus. Virginia state law requires dogs and cats be vaccinated between three and four months of age.
