Two Virginia Beach residents were arrested Tuesday after police say they were involved in a carjacking on Battery Boulevard in Williamsburg.

Police believe Kayla McManus, 22, and Christian Schroer, 23, both of Virginia Beach, were together in the 4200 block of Battery Boulevard around 4 p.m. Tuesday when McManus approached a woman, attempted to take her keys and get into her car, police spokesman Maj. Greg Riley said.

A struggle ensued as McManus tried to take the keys from the 19-year-old woman, causing the attempted robbery to be unsuccessful, Riley said.

McManus allegedly assaulted the woman during the struggle, but the victim was not injured.

After the struggle, Schroer, who had been nearby as the altercation occurred, stepped out onto Battery Boulevard in front of a van, stopped it, allowing both him and McManus to jump inside, Riley said.

The 54-year-old driver complied with the pair’s request to leave the scene, heading west on Battery Boulevard, Riley said.

After about ten minutes, Williamsburg Police located the van on Route 199 between John Tyler Highway and Jamestown Road and stopped the vehicle.

Police took McManus and Schroer into custody and transported them to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

McManus and Schroer are each charged with felony carjacking, Riley said.

McManus is also charged with robbery and misdemeanor assault in connection with an incident before the alleged carjacking.

Schroer is scheduled to appear for a hearing at 7:59 a.m. Sept. 20 in Williamsburg-James City County General District Court.

Court records did not show a scheduled hearing date for McManus as of noon Wednesday.
