James City County to name new administrator Tuesday

Eight months after James City County Administrator Bryan Hill resigned from the post, the Board of Supervisors is poised to name his replacement.

The board’s decision on the new county administrator will be announced at its 5 p.m. meeting today (Aug. 14) at the county government center, 101 Mounts Bay Road. The meeting will also be streamed live on the county’s website.

The county administrator is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the county, and as CEO develops a budget each fiscal year.

The administrator also recommends policies and directives to the Board of Supervisors, to whom they answer.

The new county administrator will be provided a base salary of $180,000 annually, according to county documents. They will be hired for a period of three years, beginning Oct. 1.

The county will also provide a vehicle allowance of $7,500 each year to the administrator in addition to salary.

The county may — “as it deems appropriate,” according to meeting documents — also pay for the administrator’s official travel expenses and their participation in regional, state and national professional organizations.

The county administrator will have their performance reviewed at least once every year. The reviews will take place every October, and more often if the board so decides.

In November 2017 Bryan Hill announced he had accepted the position of county executive for Fairfax County. His final day as county administrator for James City County was Jan. 1.

Bill Porter has served as county administrator on an interim basis since.
