VIRGINIA BEACH — A family dog died in a fire here Wednesday morning.
Fire crews were sent to the 5700 block of Paiute Road in the Arrowhead section of the city at around 7:30 a.m.
No one was home at the time of the fire, but two dogs were inside, fire officials said.
“One did not survive, the other one was removed by firefighters, given oxygen and transported by VB Animal Control to a local veterinary hospital in serious condition,” said Art Kohn, Virginia Beach Fire Department spokesman. “At last report, the dog was said to be responding to treatment but condition still serious.”
Kohn said crews contained the fire to a space underneath the stairwell on the first floor of the two-story home, and was under control in less than 20 minutes of the first units arriving on scene.
The fire appears to be accidental in nature, Kohn said, but its exact cause remains under investigation.
