Drivers on eastbound Interstate 64 in York County should be prepared for a new traffic pattern beginning Tuesday night, the Virginia Department of Transportation said.

Traffic will be shifted overnight from the existing concrete travel lanes onto new lanes in the second segment of the I-64 widening project, starting near Jefferson Avenue (exit 247) and continuing about 2 miles east to the Segment II project limits, VDOT said. The shift is being done so VDOT can reconstruct the concrete travel lanes.

To complete the shift, VDOT will close the I-64 east on-ramps from Yorktown Road (Route 238) and Jefferson Avenue (Route 143). There will be intermittent stoppages of up to 20 minutes on I-64 east, from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Alternating single-lane closures will also be in place, VDOT said.
