This cat is lucky to be alive, thanks to Virginia Beach firefighters

VIRGINIA BEACH — A fire Saturday afternoon destroyed a Knotts Island home.

Fire officials said crews battling the blaze “found the family’s cat, near death, inside the home.”

“The cat was revived utilizing a special oxygen mask, sized for small animals,” said Art Kohn, Virginia Beach Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters found the cat “about an hour into the operation.”

Responding fire crews reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the home on Woodleigh Road.

The home sustained heavy damage to the roof and every room inside the structure.

Crews from Knotts Island Fire and Rescue as wells as Currituck Fire and Rescue also responded.

Kohn said the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, “but appears to be related to cooking on the stove.”

No other injuries were reported.
