Arrest made in Norfolk teen’s shooting death

NORFOLK — A Virginia Beach man has been arrested in connection with the Sunday night shooting death of 15-year-old Norfolk girl.

Deiontrae D. Bates, 20, was arrested in the 100 block of Wales Drive Monday afternoon. He is charged with second-degree murder, attempted malicious wounding and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, police said in a news release.

Bates is being held in Norfolk City Jail without bond.

The shooting took place shortly after 11 p.m. in the 400 block of West 28th Street Sunday.

Police were called out to the scene to investigate a call about a gunshot disturbance. There, they found the girl “suffering from gunshot wounds,” police said.

She was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Further information about the case, including a motive, was not immediately released.
