A stack of vehicles caught fire Wednesday in a Toano salvage yard, less than a mile west of Two Drummers Smokehouse on U.S. 60.
Crews responded shortly after 10 a.m. to reports of a stack of more than a dozen salvaged vehicles on fire at James City County Recycling, 8952 Richmond Roads, said Battalion Chief Al Catlett of the James City County Fire Department.
Firefighters from James City County, James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department, New Kent County Fire Department and York County Department of Fire & Life Safety brought the blaze control just after 11 a.m.
At one point an employee at the junkyard had to remove vehicles with a machine used to stack them so crews could fight the fire, Catlett said.
“They had to tear the pile apart to get in there and hose everything down,” Catlett said. “You get that many cars burning in one spot, that’s a lot of stuff.”
James City County fire marshals are investigating, Catlett said.
No one was injured in the fire, and no buildings were damaged.
