NORFOLK — Virginia State Police said a man tried to elude officers following a vehicle crash Saturday by jumping off the Willoughby Bay Bridge here.

The man, who has not been identified, also left an injured female passenger inside the car.

State Police dispatchers received a call about a one-vehicle crash at 12:43 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 64 westbound at the Willoughby Bay Bridge.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that a 2003 BMW was traveling at a high rate of speed in the westbound lanes, ran off the road and struck the side wall of the bridge,” State Police wrote in a news release.

The man “exited the vehicle and jumped off the bridge, leaving a female subject injured in the front seat.”

Norfolk Marine Police and Coast Guard were called to the scene and were able to rescue the man from the water.

He was immediately “detained” and taken to Norfolk General Hospital.

Police said the female passenger was also taken to the hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries.”

Her name was not immediately released.
