Police: Speed was a factor in crash that killed two people

VIRGINIA BEACH — Police here said a motorcycle crashed into a moped in the 1400 block of Dam Neck Road on Thursday, killing both riders.

Police said the motorcyclist was racing a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek and that both vehicles were seen accelerating from the traffic signal at Harpers Road. Just ahead, a moped was traveling in the same lane as the motorcycle.

The motorcycle ran into the rear of the moped, throwing the motorcyclist into a ditch, police said, and the motorcycle “burst into flames.”

Both the riders of the motorcycle and moped died at the scene. Information on their identities was not immediately released.

The driver of the Subaru Crosstrek, a juvenile, was arrested and and charged with “racing which resulted in the death of another” and “reckless driving,” police said.

That driver is being held in the Juvenile Detention Center.

Speed is a contributing factor in this crash, police said.
