Norfolk theater bringing Harry Potter and comedy together Thursday

NORFOLK — Everybody loves Harry Potter – the boy who lived. Well, everybody that is except ugly Lord Voldemort and his loser Death Eaters.

Thursday evening Nerdvana and the Push Comedy Theater will give local fans of the mega-popular book and movie series the chance to laugh along as they present “Harry Potter and the Cauldron of Comedy – Riddikulus!”

Tickets are just $5, but for nerds (or even those posing as a nerd) who come in their favorite Potter costume, admission is free.

Will Potter fans be offended by the humorous portrayal of the heroes they admire?

“The goal of the show is to both celebrate and lovingly poke fun at the books and movies,” said Sean Devereux, producer of the Nerdvana series and co-owner of the theater. “The cast is made up of some pretty big Harry Potter fans, so we think it’ll be ok.”

Devereux said the show is entirely improvised so anything might happen.

Is the show only for Potter fans?

“Not at all,” he said. “I think a love for Harry Potter will give you a better appreciation for the show, but you don’t need to be a die-hard fan to have a good time. While there will be some references true fans will pick up on, we want the show to be something everyone can enjoy.”

He said that even if a person’s knowledge of the Harry Potter books or movies goes no further than knowing that it’s about kids at a school for wizards, they can expect a fun time.

“We wear the word nerd as a badge of honor. We think being a nerd means having a deep love and passion for something. That love could be for Harry Potter or Star Trek or baseball or The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” Devereux said.

Where did the idea to mix comedy and pop culture come from?

“We do tons of shows at the Push. During those shows one scene out of 20 may be about Star Wars or the Avengers or some other pop culture property,” Devereux said. “Those scenes always get a huge response. It got us thinking, what if there was a whole show devoted to this?”

There’ll be a few Harry Potter themed surprises in store, he added, and whether someone is a Gryffindor or Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, the family-friendly show (“strictly PG,” said Devereux) will offer something for them.

Tickets can be purchased online. (Accio tickets!) For information call 757-333-7442.

Nerdvana is a brand new monthly show at the Push Comedy Theater. Each month, shows lovingly poke fun at a favorite sci-fi and fantasy book, television show, or movie.
