This weekend, Williamsburg will see a swarm of about 200 cyclists on the roads as the 46th annual Eastern Tandem Rally returns to the area for the first time in 25 years.

The tandem bikes, which feature two seats, will follow courses along and thorough the Colonial Parkway, Chickahominy Riverfront Park, York River State Park and the Virginia Capital Trail. The event will not cause any road closures and will be headquartered at the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel.

Cyclists will have the option to choose between routes spanning from 22 to 62 miles.

“We are lucky that the area around Williamsburg has been improved with trails and bike lanes, so it makes for nice riding,” said Reed Nester, who planned the rally along with his wife, Karen.

Reed and Karen Nester are fans of tandem bikes and have covered about 46,000 miles during the past 16 years on theirs. They’ve been to the Eastern Tandem Rally a number of times and took the opportunity to plan one in Williamsburg after being approached with the volunteer opportunity at last year’s rally.

The event is so popular that it sold out within the first four hours of registration in February, Reed Nester said. Cyclists from across the East Coast registered at $145 a person to participate in the rally, which includes a banquet, an ice cream social, maps and rest areas.

The registration fees gave the Nesters a budget of $34,000 to work with this year. They used the funds to plan and provide as much for the visitors as possible, but the cyclists still have to find their own lodging and other meals  in downtown Williamsburg.

“This is the perfect example of sports tourism in action,” Reed Nester said. “We have a beautiful area here and a place where people want to come and ride their bikes.”

There will be three days of scheduled rides as well as additional individual rides with the help of the Richmond Area Tandem Society and BikeWalk Williamsburg.

“It’ll be really great to show off our area and share local expertise,” Reed Nester said.
