To celebrate National Mosquito Awareness Week, York County Mosquito Control will host a tire recycling event next week.

York County residents can bring old tires for recycling to the Public Works Complex, 105 Service Drive, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m June 23.

Tires are notorious for harboring large numbers of mosquito larvae because water can get trapped in the sides, which creates ideal conditions for producing the insects, said Michelle Slosser of Mosquito Control.

“Tire recycling is important because tires do not degrade very fast when thrown away and will just build up in our landfills or backyards for decades if not recycled,” Slosser said.

Any type of tires on or off the rim may be brought in for recycling, but tires from businesses will not be accepted. The tires should be cleaned of any mud or dirt.

The Virginia Peninsula Public Service Authority provides containers for the tires and hauls they away to be recycled into items such as horse-stall mats or sports fields.

Residents must register their address upon recycling because only five tires from each household will be accepted.
