
The longest day of the year is June 21, and James City County is marking the occasion with a day full of fun activities.
To celebrate the summer solstice, James City County has organized active family programs from sunrise to sunset, according to the county’s website.
The activities will begin a various times and locations. For the early riser, there are a number of morning activities to choose from:
- Sunrise paddle, ages 12 and up, 5:47 to 7 a.m., James City County Marina
- Sunrise yoga, all ages, 5:47 to 7 a.m., Jamestown Beach Event Park
- Bird walk, age 16 and up, 6 to 7 a.m., Freedom Park
- Aqua Zumba, ages 12 and up, 7 to 8 a.m., James City County Recreation Center
- Pickleball, ages 14 and up, 8 to 10 a.m., Veterans Park
- Fit Momma/Stroller Fit, all ages, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Veterans Park
- Line dancing, ages 55 and up, 10 a.m. to noon, James City County Recreation Center
- Arts preview, ages 16 and up, 10:30 a.m. to noon, James City County Recreation Center
There are also events that continue into the evening for those that don’t intend to rise with the sun:
- Geocaching scavenger hunt, all ages, 11 a.m.-sunset, Warhill Sports Complex
- Pickup basketball and 3-point competition, ages 8 and up, noon to 1 p.m., James City County Recreation Center
- Nature walk, all ages, 1 to 2 p.m., Freedom Park
- SilverSneakers BOOM Move It class, all ages, 2 to 3 p.m., James City County Recreation Center
- Stand-up Paddleboard Yoga, ages 12 and up, 2 to 3 p.m., James City County Recreation Center
- Stand-up Paddleboard Yoga, ages 12 and up, 4 to 5 p.m., Jamestown Beach Event Park
Going into the evening, the county has also planned a series of fun activities:
- Jamestown Jams concert, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Jamestown Beach Event Park
- Sunset paddle, ages 12 and up, 8 to 9 p.m., James City County Marina
- Owl Prowl guided nature walk, families and adults, 8 to 9 p.m., Freedom Park Interpretive Park
