With summer fun on the way, the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office has some tips to help residents stay safe during the warm months.

“Summer means a break from school and a chance to take a vacation — unfortunately, summer also provides opportunities for criminal activity in your neighborhoods,” the sheriff’s office said.

Crime-prevention tips for summer include:

  • Install lighting on your home, such as motion-activated lights or dusk-to-dawn detector lights.
  • Trim shrubs and bushes around your home to get rid of hiding spots.
  • Do not leave bikes unattended or without bike locks for any amount of time.
  • Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings while out for a walk, jog or bike ride.
  • When on vacation, install a locking mailbox or ask a neighbor to pick up your mail.
  • Know your neighbors: Let a neighbor you trust know if you are leaving town. “Neighbors who know each other look out for each other,” the sheriff’s office said.
