Floyd Edward “June” Hill Jr., 88, departed this life Saturday, June 2, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was a native and lifetime resident of Yorktown.
In 1947, he was hired by J.W. Hornsby to work for the Hornsby Oil Co., and he continued his relationship with the Hornsby family for the next 71 years.
He appeared in Bruce Hornsby music videos on MTV, rapped on the album “Big Swing Face,” and made live concert appearances with Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers, performing as “‘Lightnin’ Blue Floyd Hill.”
He was a well-known and beloved figure throughout the Yorktown and Williamsburg communities. His upbeat style and infectious smile will be missed and fondly remembered.
He is survived by his five daughters, Edith Wallace, Alice Hill and Floydean Stringfield, all of Newport News, Charlotte Hill of Yorktown, and Alelia Hill of Washington, D.C.; five sisters, Maggie Hundley of Williamsburg, and Pauline Carter, Carolyn Weal, Hettie Gee and Lillian Perrin, all of Newport News; one brother, Sherman Hill of Newport News; and seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A wake will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at Colossian Baptist Church, 856 Old Fort Eustis Blvd., Newport News. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 8, at the church, with the Rev. Peter Evans officiating. Burial will be held in the Yorktown Masonic Cemetery.
