You can workout and see the animals. Here’s how

NORFOLK — The Virginia Zoo is partnering with the YMCA of South Hampton Roads to host a range of fitness classes throughout the summer for all ages.

“The walking program we hosted last year with the YMCA was a great first step, this year we wanted a variety of classes to fit the needs of our diverse guests,” said Greg Bockheim, the Zoo’s executive director. “This is a great opportunity to let people stay fit while seeing how breathtaking the Zoo grounds are.”

The classes will be once a month starting May 26 until Aug. 25, before the Zoo opens from 9 to 10 a.m.

Some of the classes offered include Mixxedfit and adult and family yoga. The walking program from last summer, Zoo Tracks, will be offered on Sept. 22, from 10 to 11 a.m.

“The Y on Granby and the Blocker YMCA are excited to get people moving at the Virginia Zoo,” said Gina Adrover, Health and Wellness director for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. “Any type of movement is important to stay healthy in life, so we’re offering a variety of group fitness classes, led by certified instructors, for everyone to enjoy. We look forward to seeing familiar faces and some new ones, as we workout together surrounded by the unique environment of the Virginia Zoo.”

Here’s the rundown:

  • May 26: Mixxedfit 9-10 a.m.
  • June 23: Adult & Family Yoga 9-10 a.m.
  • July 28: High Intensity Interval Training & Kid Fit 9-10am
  • Aug. 25: Zumba 9-10 a.m.
  • Sept. 22: Zoo Tracks 10-11 a.m .

There is no cost to Virginia Zoo and YMCA of South Hampton Roads members – it’s general admission cost to others.  Spots for each class are limited so to ensure a spot in a class, RSVP on the Virginia Zoo website.
