Virginia state parks are kicking off summer with their annual National Kids to Parks Day this weekend.
Summer programs begin at state parks Saturday (May 19), according to a press release. Virginia State Parks have celebrated National Kids to Parks Day since it began in 2011.
Park guests will get a free parking pass that will be good for one future visit to a state park.
Both the York River and the James River state parks will host special events Saturday, including ranger guided programs throughout the day. James River State Park is also hosting a scavenger hunt for kids.
National Kids to Parks Day also marks the beginning of two contests that run through June 30.
Families who visit five different State Parks throughout the summer will receive a $66 gift certificate that can cover the cost of a state parks pass.
By submitting five photos taken in parks, photographers can be eligible for grand prizes valued up to $500. Extra credit can be out toward earning top prizes by sharing photos on social media with the hashtag #vspoutdoors.
