Williamsburg nominated for best historic small town in online contest

Williamsburg has been a favorite destination spot for families for decades, and now it could be getting recognition for quaint culture in USAToday’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice contest  for best historic small town.

“We know how great Williamsburg is, but [if we won] it would show through a national media outlet how much we have to offer,” said Bob Harris, senior vice president of tourism for the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance.

Each year, USAToday nominates 20 cities across the nation to compete for a spot in the top 10 list of best historic small towns. Nominated towns are chosen by the publication, then online voters choose their favorites, Harris said.

To be nominated, cities must have a population of less than 30,000 as of the last census. This size population is what USAToday views as making the town “fun and affordable ways to drive into our nation’s past,” according to a release from the publication.

“I think Williamsburg deserves to make the list,” said Amy Jordan, economic development director. “It has a small-town feel, but at the same time there is so much to do here. The quality of life and perfect blend of old and new makes Williamsburg a good place for residents and visitors.”

Williamsburg currently is ranked fifth behind Haddonfield, N.J.; Natchitoches, La.; Dodge City, Kan.; and St. Augustine and Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Contest Voting is open until noon Monday, and only one vote can be cast per person per day. The 10 winning towns will be announced on May 18.
