VIRGINIA BEACH — Louis Jones is now interim-Mayor of Virginia Beach.

Jones was unanimously voted in by City Council at the beginning of Tuesday’s formal session.

April 30 was Will Sessoms’ last day in office as mayor. Council member Jim Wood was unanimously elected vice mayor, filling Jones’ former role.

City Council also authorized City Attorney Mark Stiles to file paperwork with the Circuit Court for a special election, when registered voters of Virginia Beach will elect a new mayor for a four-year term.

Stiles confirmed that the special election will be held during the general elections on Nov. 6.

Several candidates for mayor have emerged since Sessoms’ abrupt resignation on April 18. The list includes former City Council member Linwood Branch, state Del. Glenn Davis and Virginia Beach City Council members Bobby Dyer and Ben Davenport.
