VIRGINIA BEACH — May events are expected to draw an estimated 85,000 locals and visitors to the Virginia Beach Convention Center, city officials said.
More than 20 events — both public and private — will fill the halls ballrooms and exhibits spaces starting with an afternoon symphony performance this week, according to a news release from the city.

Here’s a look at some of this month’s offerings:
- May 2: Virginia Symphony Afternoon Encore, a special concert for the senior community — Join the musicians of the Virginia Symphony on a musical tour through the years with romantic string music, rousing marches, toe-tapping favorites and an audience sing-along. Accommodations for wheelchairs, scooters and other assistive devices will be available. Doors open at 1 p.m. with the performance starting at 2 p.m. and lasting approximately an hour and 15 minutes. This is a ticketed event open to all ages.
- May 5 – 6: The U.S. Finals – Cheer and Dance Competition —This annual event features cheer and dance teams from across the region and country who gather to compete in dozens of divisions and categories. In addition to the competitions, there will be vendors offering the latest in dance and cheer accessories as well as a street fair. This is a ticketed event.
- May 12 – 13: Tidewater Comicon — Now in its fifth year, the VBCC is pleased to again welcome Tidewater Comicon, Virginia’s largest comic book convention. Featuring an amazing mix of comic book creators, TV, film and media special guests, a Cosplay contest, toys/collectibles, gaming, and much more. Tidewater Comicon wants all to know: “If it’s Geeky, we got it!” Passes are available on site or in advance. Find out more here.
- May 25 – 28: 19th Annual National High School Coaches Association National Duals — This event brings four days of action-packed wrestling to Virginia Beach as athletes in a variety of ages, weights and divisions compete for titles. More than 370 teams are expected to compete in dozens of matches during the tournament. Athletic recruiters from a number of colleges and universities attend this event to seek out prospects. This is a ticketed event.
