Changes in traffic patterns on Interstate 64 will begin this weekend.
Traffic shifts are scheduled as part of the widening project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Traffic will be moved from the existing travel lanes to new lanes constructed on the interstate’s median. The shifts will allow for the reconstruction of the two outside lanes.
Both eastbound and westbound lanes will be affected.
The first shift will begin early Sunday (April 29) on I-64 east from exit 242 for Route 199 to mile marker 245 by the Burma Road bridge in Grove.
The shifts will also be accompanied by ramp closures, beginning at 11 p.m. Saturday (April 28) through 9 a.m. Sunday. Detours will be in place with signs directing drivers where to go.
The exit 243A off-ramp from I-64 east to Route 60 near Busch Gardens and the exit 243B off-ramp from eastbound I-64 to Route 143 west will be closed alongside the traffic shifts.
There will also be traffic stoppages for construction on the on- and off-ramps at exit 242A/242B on I-64 east between 11 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. The I-64 east on-ramp from Route 60 will also be closed during those times.
VDOT also scheduled nightly single-lane closures as part of the ongoing I-64 widening project.
Some lanes and ramps will close between April 28 and May 3. Crews contracted by the Virginia Department of Transportation will be performing work on I-64 from the Colonial Parkway to Lee Hall (exit 247) on both east and westbound lanes.
Signed detours will be in place.
