HAMPTON ROADS – In an effort to recognize the efforts made by military service members, May will be Military Appreciation Month at the Virginia Aquarium.
On Sundays and Mondays during the month, those on active duty, serving in the reserves, or even retired from the military will get half off of their admission to the Aquarium.
“The military community in Hampton Roads is so essential to the fabric of our area that we felt this was one thing we could do to highlight their personal and familial sacrifices,” said Cynthia Spanoulis, interim director of the Aquarium, which features over 10,000 animals representing over 300 species, including threatened and endangered species from around the world.
Spanoulis said that although the military May special has been offered before, a military discount is offered regularly, including a year-round 10-percent discount on memberships.
Tickets must be purchased in person and a valid military ID is required.
Acceptable forms of ID include a military ID card; a Veterans Affairs ID card; a current Leave and Earnings Statement; a drivers license with veteran designation; government (local, state, or national) ID with individual photographed in uniform; the wearing of a uniform (if service permits); Veterans Organization Card (American Legion or VFW); Federal Veterans ID Card; a DD214, discharge paperwork, or other form of military identification.
Also during the month of May, military members can visit the Norfolk Premium Outlets, receive discounts, and have a chance to win gift cards.
On May 5, 12, and 19, those with a valid military ID can enter a drawing between 12-6 p.m. for the chance to win a $100 gift card. One will be given away every hour.
“We’re extremely grateful for the selfless sacrifices made by the brave men and women of this community,” said Chris Wayman, general manager for Norfolk Premium Outlets. “We’re proud to offer ongoing support for military members and their families, including reserved parking and year-round military discounts at select stores.”
Wayman said more than 30 stores in the outlet center offer year-round discounts to military members.
