Thunderstorms to move across Southside Wednesday afternoon

VIRGINIA BEACH — Did you bring your umbrella to work today? Thunderstorms are expected to impact the Southside most of Wednesday afternoon.

Southsiders can expect thunderstorms to impact the area from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., with some areas experiencing “isolated damaging winds” of up to 60 mph, said Eswar Iyer, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

“There is a threat for some isolated damaging winds, but it’s certainly not going to be a major event,” Iyer said, adding that the chance of hail during the thunderstorm is extremely minimal.

Iyer could not predict which areas of the Southside might be impacted by wind.

As the storm exits the area, a cold front is expected to move in — and stick around for about a week.

Wednesday night’s temperatures are expected to dip into the 40s. Come Thursday, temperatures will rise to the 60s, and continue into the 70s on Friday, Iyer said.

Temperatures will dip into the 40s again on Saturday, accompanied by cold rain that isn’t expected to move out until late into the night. On Sunday, temperatures are expected to rise again into the 50s, Iyer said.

Monday and Tuesday could bring more rain, but temperatures will stay in the high 50s, Iyer said.

“There’s obviously going to be some uncertainty once we get later into that forecast,” Iyer said, “but i’m expecting below average temperatures through Wednesday.”
