The City of Williamsburg is offering to help you clean out your garage.
Williamsburg is hosting a recycling day for common items that can be difficult to dispose of, such as used tires, vehicular and lawnmower fluid and batteries, and scrap metal, according to a city press release.
The recycling day will be held on Saturday, April 21, between 8 a.m. and noon at the city’s Public Works Complex on Armistead Avenue.
“What this event offers is a way to get rid of items you cannot put in your trash or recycle cart,” Director of Public Works and Utilities Dan Clayton said in the release.
Clayton added all of the items collected will be recycled rather than taken to a landfill. He also thanked city staff for organizing and finding funding for the event. The city received a $1,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
The event is not open for businesses, only recycling from private residences.
Items that may be recycled include tires (on or off the rim, with a limit 10 per resident), 6 or 12-volt batteries typically found in cars or lawnmowers, motor oil and antifreeze in sealed containers, oil filters, scrap metals including vehicle parts and bicycles, and appliances without freon, a refrigerant.
Alkaline batteries will not be accepted.
“Not only does this event promote environmental stewardship through appropriate disposal and recycling methods, it’s also good for our health,” Paul Reeser, water and sewer superintendent, said. “Old tires and unused junk tend to collect water, and in the summer, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitos.”
The city provides biweekly recycling for standard items such as paper, cardboard, glass and aluminum.
