The sounds of a mid-century American composer and student composers will conclude the Ewell Concert Series.

Mind on Fire, a Baltimore-based chamber orchestra that spotlights diverse composers, will take the stage in Ewell Hall Saturday at 7:30 p.m., according to the College of William & Mary.

The chamber group will play four songs by Moondog, an American composer who made his music on homemade percussion instruments in New York in the 1940s and 50s.

William & Mary composers Abner Mondoloka, Amy Squire, and Allison Greenday will also be featured by Mind on Fire. Other selections include “Recitations” by Georges Aperghis, “True Fluorescent Skeleton” by James Young, Alex Temple’s “Thick Line” and “pulse/shade” by Cat Lamb.

“At one level we are a flux ensemble capable of playing contemporary classical music with a high degree of virtuosity,” conductor and co-founder James Young said on the William & Mary website. “At our foundational level, however, Mind on Fire is a non-profit organization built to provide access to performing artists…Mind on Fire was formed not only as an active musical body but as a home for experimentation, connection, and artistic freedom.”

Admission is free.
