The James City County Police Department will be increasing DUI patrols throughout St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

“Celebrators are encouraged to arrange a safe ride home prior to going out if you intend to drink. Additionally, all motorists are reminded to always buckle up,” the police department said in a news release.

During the 2016 St. Patrick’s Day holiday period, 39 percent of all national motor vehicle crash fatalities involved drunk drivers, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

Additionally, from 2012 to 2016, 38 percent of the drunk-driving fatalities during this holiday period involved drivers who had blood alcohol concentrations well above the .08 limit, resulting in 269 drunk-driving fatalities total across the country, according to a news release from the county police department.
