VIRGINIA BEACH — With spring around the corner, a new family-friendly fitness center is preparing to make its debut — just in time for warmer weather.

The 80,000 square foot Redmill Onelife Fitness facility is expected to open at the end of March off of General Booth Blvd. The new facility will provide a kid’s club, splash zone, lap pool, cardio rooms, four-lane lap pool, free weight area, high-intensity interval training at Zone 4, multiple fitness rooms for classes such as yoga, barre, abs, and Les Mills workouts, and much more.

For families joining the gym, the designated kid areas will allow parents to workout and unwind, while also offering a fun experience for the whole family in the splash zone.

“Parents may drop their children off at our kid’s club and exercise while their children enjoy themselves and interact with others their age,” said Andrew Macowski, gym manager and 2009 Ocean Lakes High School graduate. “Our new location will also have a children’s splash area the parent may take their child in and enjoy splashing around together.”

Safety for the children is a top priority for Onelife. After checking in at the front door, parents and children will also be checked-in at the entrance of the kid’s club.

“Safety comes first,” said Brandon Layes, general manager and Chesapeake native. “The kid’s club staff are AED and CPR certified and are also given a background check.”

Layes’ children grew up, and are still growing up, attending the kid’s club and they love it, he said.

“They get to interact with different kids from all walks of life,” Layes added.

The kid’s club will include a basketball court, seating area for art and homework, movie theater, jungle gym with slides, and a designated area for kids two and under to play.

With a child membership, children ages 3 to 6 months can attend the kids club for one hour, while those ages 6 months to 12 years old can stay for two hours.

“Families can also split-up the two hours, which is fine,” Layes said. “Sometimes a parent works out for an hour with their little one in the kid’s zone, and then they have to leave to get another child off the bus or for a meeting, and the other parent comes in with the child for the second hour.”

The splash zone will be separated from the other areas of the pool by a half-wall. The space will include a variety of waterworks and slides in a couple of inches of water for ease of cleaning. In the lap pool area, the club plans to offer youth swim classes.

Kid’s on sports teams, both school and travel can work on strength and conditioning in the performance space that Onelife will rent out to local area teams. The basketball area that houses two half-courts will also be an option for programs looking for places to hold games and practices.

For adults, an extensive array of fitness rooms, areas, and classes will be available each day. Class times will be determined by the traffic and needs of the members.

The layout of the gym was designed to keep the feel and emotion of certain areas from intruding on others.

“We moved the studio far away from the loud areas and classes like the free weights,” Layes said. “The walls are double insulated from the kids club as well.”

For yoga and barre enthusiasts, the mind and body studio has bamboo flooring, barres around the room, 25-foot ceilings while those looking for slam balls, speed ropes, tire flips, and sleds can do so in the functional training zone upstairs.

Personal training is available and will take place in a private area versus in the main rooms.

“When people are looking to get back into shape they don’t want to be judged,” Layes said. “We offer them privacy whether they are just getting back into the gym after having a child or looking to improve their health and wellness.”

If you’re looking to unwind after a strenuous workout and relieve stress, the facility has multiple options including a whirlpool, dry sauna, and hydromassage.

“This hot water full-body massage is a great recovery tool for after your workout, as well as a nice way to relax,” Makowski said.

As the first Onelife club to offer the hydro massage, it can be used as a pre or post-workout.

“A member can do an awesome spin class and then relax before heading home,” Layes said. “Members can target an area and adjust the pressure. It’s truly relaxation at its best.”

Onelife Fitness clubs are family-owned and operated in the United States with locations in Virginia, Maryland, and Georgia.

“Some people think we are a corporate company, but we aren’t,” Layes said. “Kids are growing up in our kid’s clubs and the club staff are babysitting for members in the community. Family is important”
