Update Friday 5:37 p.m.:
James City County Police have identified a man killed by a falling tree on Newman Road as 44-year-old Shawn Gregory Walker of Poquoson.
The Ford truck and trailer struck by the tree belongs to Bones Tile. The vehicle was operated by the owner of that company at the time of the accident, according to police.
Update Friday 4:30 p.m.:
One person is dead and another injured after a tree fell on a truck on Newman Road Friday.
The passenger, an adult male, died at the scene, according to police.
Emergency responders took two hours to extricate the adult male driver of the work truck, who survived the crash, according to James City County Police Deputy Chief Steve Rubino.
The driver was alert and conscious as emergency responders worked to remove him from the vehicle, Rubino said. He was transported to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, Rubino said.
The Virginia Department of Transportation, fire-rescue crews from James City County and York County, a tow truck and Dominion Energy are all on scene working to clear the scene.
The road between Riverview Road and North Cove Road is expected to be closed at least one or two more hours, Rubino said.
A detour is in place, according to VDOT.
VDOT is working to clear the oak tree from the road and cut down another “weak” tree nearby that could fall, Rubino added.
After the tow truck removes the vehicle, Dominion Energy will work on fixing a power line damaged by the tree.
One person is confirmed dead after a tree fell on a truck on Newman Road in James City County, according to a James City County news release.
James City County Police responded to the scene in the 7700 block of Newman Road at 12:50 p.m. after a large oak tree fell on a 2006 Ford work truck and trailer.
The truck was travelling south on Newman road when the tree fell due to the strong winds.
Public safety, VDOT, and Dominion Energy personnel are on the scene.
