A rumor of a weapon on a high school campus Thursday turned out to be unfounded.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office stated on Facebook that a weapon of a “specific type” was rumored to be in a vehicle parked on Grafton High School’s campus.
The type of weapon was not specified in the post, and a YPSO spokesperson did not immediately respond to request for comment.
An investigation was immediately launched by the school, with the sheriff’s office in line with the office’s threat assessment protocol.
The investigation showed that there was no basis to the rumors, but nevertheless the sheriff’s office said it, along with the school, take all such rumors seriously.
“We also want to commend students for bringing this rumor to our attention,” stated the Facebook post. “We all have a responsibility to treat information regarding school safety with caution.”
The YPSO asked school safety concerns to be reported directly to police and school administrators, rather than sharing them on social media.
“Quite simply, if you hear or see something, say something to a trusted adult,” the YPSO post stated.
